The Tennessee Native American Eagle Organization is joined by The Leiper’s Fork Merchants Association for the 3rd Annual Natchez Trace Powwow in Historic Leiper’s Fork Village

Historic Village of Leiper’s Fork, Franklin, TN:  The Tennessee Native American Eagle Organization (TNAEO) joins the Leiper’s Fork Merchants Association to present the 3rd Annual  Natchez Trace Powwow in the village of Leiper’s Fork on Saturday and Sunday, August 12 & 13, 2006 at the corner of Old Hillsboro and Floyd Road.

Last year’s premier was a huge success exceeding the expectations of everyone involved.  Over ninety-two dancers representing dozens of American Indian Nations strutted their colors and feathers as the drums thundered along Leiper’s Creek.   “In my seventy-seven years attending more than 150 different powwows and putting a few on myself,  I don’t think I have enjoyed one more than this one.  With a few minor adjustments it could easily be the best in America ”, said Jack Crow Phillips, a Native American elder from the West Tennessee area.  At least 3,000 people spent much of their weekend enjoying Native American food, singing, dancing, demonstrations and more.  The Art and Food vendors were elated by the attendance and success of the event and plan on returning in 2006 for another great Powwow this August.  This year an even greater emphasis is being placed on demonstrations and inter-active learning by artisans such as, flint knappers, basket-weavers, potters, hide tanners and more.

Our mission is to provide an affordable event that educates and entertains the local and outlying communities about Native Americans, while providing a traditional re-union for Native American Indian people.  A special emphasis will be placed on exhibiting the historical link of the indigenous cultures within the Middle Tennessee area.  Through our mission, we hope to provide a means of raising funds to help sponsor the Tennessee Native American Eagle Awards as well as provide local schools with educational material on Native American culture.

Hours for the traditional powwow are 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday; Grand Entry day is at 12:30 with an additional Grand Entry being held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Admission is $6 for adults; $3 for children aged 6 -12; $3 for Seniors aged 60+ and Children 5 and under are Free.  All proceeds benefit the Tennessee Native American Eagle Awards and Hillsboro Elementary and Middle School Library.
